Proficiencies
We understand that some neighbors are coming to Medusa’s School for specific skills and we may not see them again, and some are coming to brush up on past knowledge, but we know that some of you are deeply invested in our collective futures as Austinites, Texans, Americans, and humans, in the face of our current political, economic, socio-cultural, and global-environmental crises.
These four pillars supporting the futures we planned or are planning for have been crumbling around us, decade by decade, year by year, month by week by day, and we acknowledge the uncomfortable truth that:
No one is coming to save us. However, we are not helpless.
Thus, on top of USCCA’s mini-certifications, Medusa’s School offers six proficiencies that students can pursue, based on their goals, capacity, time, and money. Think of these like “majors” 👩🎓. These are the roles we see neighbors taking up, not at some vague future point, but now—if not for their communities, then for themselves.
Medusa’s School’s students vow to do no harm, but if the circumstance requires:
take no shit.
Gorgons’ Lair
Relevant to the neighbors who own shops, clubs, bars, lead congregations, and school admins who want to harden their establishments from violence and preserve life.

Euryale’s Domain
Euryale, while not as well-known as Medusa, is described as the fastest of the three Gorgon sisters. Unlike Medusa, who was mortal, Euryale is immortal. Her name translates roughly to “far-roaming,” “wide-leaping,” or “broad-wandering,” hinting at her vast presence over wide regions, moving swiftly across her homeland of the seas.
This proficiency is relevant to neighbors who are ready to develop perspective, habits, skills, and mindsets to transform themselves and where they live with their immediate friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, co-worshipers, classmates, etc., stepping far and wide. Stheno’s Might
Stheno, while not as well-known as Medusa, is described as the most powerful of the three Gorgon sisters. Unlike Medusa, who was mortal, Stheno is immortal, depicted as being more ferocious and aggressive than her sisters. She is known to be unstoppable in her rage—a casual breaker of ancient armies and strong men. Her name, which translates roughly to “strength,” “forceful,” or “mighty” reflects her warrior skill, but often overlooked, underneath her fury, is her tender heart as the eldest sibling and role as a protector of her sisters.
This proficiency is hardcore and is relevant to the neighbors who want to not only practice self and home defense with the most serious tools, training, safety, and responsibility, but also be an advocate and community consultant for public protected pacifism, wherever and whenever it is necessary. This is the most intensive, disciplined, and expensive track, and requires taking all classes that Medusa’s School offers, on top of building your own community with your immediate neighbors and developing your perspective, habits, skills, and mindset.

However, if you are on this path, your education training shouldn’t end with us because we’re just the entry! Since this is an Austin-based program, Medusa’s School recommends The Range at Austin’s Shooting Dojo ($214/month), and seeking other trainings that we don’t (currently) offer, like ham radio communications, personal physical fitness/athleticism, homesteading and growing food, etc.
