🧍♀️Personal Protection, Situational Awareness, & Conflict Avoidance

Class Description
Developing a personal protection plan is a key component of not only preparing for how we should (or might) react if confronted by a violent crime, but also how we might avoid violent crime in the first place. This class builds the mentality that developing a personal protection plan is about much more than becoming proficient with a firearm or writing up a home invasion plan. It’s a plan that must encompass awareness, avoidance, and preparation, so that we’re less likely to find ourselves in a situation where we have no other option than to use force or deadly force, rather than more likely.

📊Mythbusting Firearms, U.S. Gun Violence, & Gun Laws

Class Description
The “United” States has the highest rate of gun homicides in the world. Over the last decade, mass shootings have become a completely unnecessary and horrific part of our American culture. Other countries took away guns and saw declining gun violence. That is empirical evidence, isn’t it? So why not just take away the guns???
This class opens with a high level summary of many US gun violence data points, including key definitions, data trends of mass shootings from the last twenty years, a breakdown on where these events are occurring, and a detailed look at police response time to these shootings. Students will also analyze whether mass shooters really do gravitate toward gun-free zones and how the response of potential victims can affect the outcome.
After, a detailed analysis of the solutions being proposed by gun control advocates will determine whether the current data indicates that those solutions should work, and look at the results of those that have been tested into law in the US. (For example, it blows many people’s minds that the US had a federal “assault weapons” ban from 1994 to 2004).
This class closes finally, with scrutinizing the conditions in our country that lead to mass shootings and massive gun violence, and advocacy suggestions on how we systemically move past them as an American society.

- An open mind. Before the formation of Medusa’s School, this training personally convinced more than a couple of neighbors who were staunch gun control advocates, so if you identify as such, that is perfectly OK. Just know that this class will rub up against deeply held beliefs and trauma from our societal experiences of horrible, senseless, and unnecessary acts of gun violence. If you choose to attend, we welcome any counterarguments to the education with humility, honesty, and constructive debate.
❤️🩹Mental Health & Suicide/Mass Shooting Prevention in the Firearms Community

Class Description
In this lesson, you will gain a deeper understanding of the implications of being a firearms owner within a greater community of firearms owners. This class is about harm reduction and preventing the loss of life, be it suicide or mass murder. We will study mental health, risk factors, pre-threat indicators, and action items/resources to utilize to prevent or respond to a mental health crisis involving a firearm, be it your own or someone else. This class closes with understanding the conditions that lead to suicides and mass shootings, and advocacy suggestions on how we can systemically move past them as an American society.

De-escalation
📉Nonviolent Communication & De-escalation Role Play Scenarios

Prerequisites
- Personal Protection, Situational Awareness, & Conflict Avoidance
- Non/Less-Lethal vs Lethal Self, Home, & Public Defense/Protected Pacifism Law in Texas
- Optional: read Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg
Class Description
This real-world self-defense scenario training is designed to improve your mindset and skills, regardless of experience level or background, in a safe and controlled environment. We will have a short seminar where students learn, or for others, review/revisit nonviolent communication and transformative justice principles.
Training Description
Students will role play and practice utilizing NVC/TJ principles to de-escalate scenarios. For scenarios that become too unsafe to de-escalate, students will practice making split-second decisions, which will help them to understand the legal use of force. Role playing training scenarios activate students’ mental and physical responses to mimic real self-defense scenarios, giving them a deeper understanding of how they might REALLY react under pressure, and whether their reactions are legally justified.
Note: This training will involve trainer-directed improv and potentially being sprayed with water 😛 This is our simple data-tracking methodology and totally not for fun. You may opt out of participation to observe.

Class Description
This class will introduce you to a wealth of information on different types of self-defense firearms including handguns, home defense shotguns, and the AR-15 platform, where Medusa’s School provides easy to understand explanations of the common terms used so frequently. The goal of this lesson is to de-mystify what can sometimes feel like a topic reserved for experts.
This class will continue with the basics, including a very visual overview of what we call the “building blocks” or the fundamentals for accurate and safe shooting. Within this lesson, Medusa’s School will explain the differences between the skills required for being a good “marksman” at the range, and the skills that might be required to save your life.
Finally, walk into any gun shop, and the variety of gear and gadgets available can be a bit overwhelming. Gun vaults, holsters, lights, lasers—where do you start? In this lesson, Medusa’s School will explain each of those pieces of gear, and she’ll discuss the options you should consider if you’re ready to go shopping.
Training Description
At the range, students will practice what they’ve learned in the classroom, first, shooting with somatic focus, then shooting basic shooting drills with emphasis on proper fundamentals, and finishing with a qualification test.

Class Description
This class explains what physical and mental reactions may occur when a human undergoes extreme stress, such as during an incident involving deadly force. It also explains what you should do immediately after using force to defend yourself. Also, when law enforcement arrives, it is crucial that you conduct yourself in the correct manner and prepare yourself for the consequences, even when you are in the right.
Training Description
At the range, students will practice with defense targets in instructor-guided simulations, practicing contextualized appropriate and quick responses to a deadly threat, prioritizing speed and accuracy. Training will also include bursts of physical exercise to raise the heart rate and pump adrenaline, and following through on aftercare, like being prepared for more threats, checking up on friends/family at the scene, and what to say to EMS/lawyers.
